There are apps out there that can do the job but some of them are buggy and you might end up with a corrupt Windows install. I'll here help you make a bootable USB flash drive without any third party app.

  • Format your USB flash drive simply by right clicking on it in 'My Computer' and selecting 'Format'
  • Now go to >Start menu >All programs >Accessories and right click on 'Command Prompt' and Run it as administrator.
  • Now in Command Prompt run
 DISKPART
  • Then
 LIST VOL
  • This will give you the information of your Disk Volumes. Make note of your USB Flash drive's number. We will assume here that it is VOL 1
SELECT VOL 1
ACTIVE
EXIT
  • Minimize 'Command Prompt' window. Now put your Windows 7 or Windows 8 DVD in your DVD Writer. Go to 'My Computer' and make note of your DVD writer's drive letter. Mine is 'D'. Also note down the drive letter of USB Flash drive. Mine is 'E'. Now back to 'Command Prompt'
D: CD BOOT
BOOTSECT.EXE /NT60 E:
  • Close the 'Command Prompt' window, go to 'My Computer' and right click on DVD Writer 'D' and 'Open' it. Hit 'Ctrl+A' to select everything and then 'Ctrl+C' to copy all the content. Now open your USB Flash drive and paste here by 'Ctrl+V'
  • Reboot your PC and change the boot order of BIOS to boot from your newly created Windows installation USB Flash drive.
Cheers!!!

Completely pointless as nobody gets cd"s with their computers anymore...haven't for quite a few years now.
So....how do you solve the problem without disks?
