Almost every Linux distribution comes with a good package manager from where the user can install-update-remove desired applications. But inevitably there comes a time when the need to compile an application from the source arises. The usual route to compile an application goes something like this,

source -> uncompress -> ./configure -> make -> make install

The main disadvantage of this method is it becomes very hard to keep track of the installed packages and files. Uninstalling a package cleanly can sometimes becomes nightmarish. That's where src2pkg comes into play.

src2pkg is a nifty little application for creating installable Linux software packages
that can be installed or removed using the distribution package manager. It means that you can install a package created by src2pkg from the source via dpkg, yum, installpkg according to the distribution you are running. You can remove the installed package the same way via dpkg, yum, removepkg. This ensures that nothing unnecessary is left behind when you remove a package. Your package manager takes care of that.
Installing src2pkg is very easy. Binary packages are available for Debian-Ubuntu, Fedora-RHEL, Slackware-Salix, Puppy Linux, and SliTaz. You can download src2pkg for Slackware-Salix from here,

Download src2pkg for Slackware

For other Distributions you can get your Distribution specific binaries from here,

Download src2pkg

After you have installed src2pkg you need to run the following command as root. Don't use sudo.

src2pkg --setup

If you encounter error regarding 'Tar', Install 'byacc' and run 'src2pkg --setup' again and follow the onscreen instruction. If you get an error regarding 'Fuse', then install 'libfuse-dev' and run 'src2pkg --setup' again.

After you have successfully setup src2pkg you can use it to create packages from their source. I'll give you a little example. I want to install 'cplay' in Slackware. cplay is a nice command line audio player. First I'll create a directory named 'Sources' in my home directory where I'll be keeping the packages installed from the source. In the 'Sources' directory I'll create a subdirectory named 'cplay'. Next I'll open terminal and change the working directory to 'cplay',

cd ~/Sources/cplay

Next I'm going to use wget to download cplay source package. You can use any other method to download it and then copy it to 'cplay' directory.

wget -c --content-disposition --no-check-certificate http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/pool/main/c/cplay/cplay_1.49.orig.tar.gz

Once the download has completed it is time to run src2pkg to create the package. There are tons of options that you can use while creating the package but we are going to keep it simple here.

src2pkg -CWD -C cplay_1.49.orig.tar.gz

Hit 'Enter' button and src2pkg will take care of everything. Once it has done it's job it will create a Slackware installable package 'cplay-1.49-i486-1.txz' in 'cplay' directory and all I've to do to install cplay is,

installpkg cplay-1.49-i486-1.txz

If for some reason I want to remove cplay all I've to do is,

removepkg cplay

Before running src2pkg make sure you have installed build requirements mentioned in the source package. If your system doesn't have necessary packages and libraries src2pkg won't be able to create the package.

That's it from me. For more information and getting the most out of src2pkg I suggest you to read the following document,

src2pkg Tutorial

As always suggestion, comment, critique are welcome.

Cheers!!!

I earn my bread and butter by working as a computer technician and I have to on daily basis install Windows on my client's computers. Windows in it's default installation lacks many essential softwares for day-to-day computing tasks. I used to have a DVD containing all the essential softwares and recently that DVD got broken by an accident. Burning a new DVD became necessary and I went on the hunt for the set of softwares which are essential after a fresh Windows install. My criteria was simple. Choose the softwares which are open source and only include closed source softwares when there is no viable open source alternative available.
Here I share with you my list of essential Windows softwares. This list will be useful for anyone who has just installed Windows or bought a new computer. This will also benefit those who are looking for open source or free alternatives to commercial and proprietary softwares. Clicking on the name will take you to the homepage of the software.

The FIFA football World Cup 2014 is underway in Brazil. Most people will be glued to their television sets during the matches all over the world. But there are many people who won't be able to watch it on telly for various reasons. If you are one of them and you are tied to your computer but want to keep an eye on live score of the FIFA footbal World Cup 2014 matches then worry not.

You can get the live score of ongoing match in Linux terminal even with a lousy and slow internet connection.
All you'll need for this is w3m. It is a text-based browser and pager utility. w3m is available in the repositories of almost every Linux distribution. So install it via your package manager. For example if you are running Debian-Ubuntu based distribution then,

apt-get install w3m

If you happen to be using Fedora-RedHat based distribution then,

yum install w3m

Users of Arch and it's derivatives can install it like this,

pacman -S w3m

OpenSUSE users can get it via zypper,

zypper install w3m

Gentoo-Funtoo users can emerge it,

emerge www-client/w3m

Mageia and OpenMandriva users can install it like this,

urpmi install w3m

After you have installed w3m just run the following command in terminal to get the live score of on going match. It will auto refresh the score every 10 seconds. So just let it running and you will get the updated score in your terminal.

watch -n10 --no-title "w3m http://www.livescore.com/ | egrep 'live [0-9H]+[^ ]'"

Proof of the pudding,

Enjoy 2014 FIFA footbal World Cup in Brazil!

Cheers!!!

A recent discussion on Debian forum has inspired me to write this post. If you use a minimal window manager like openbox, fluxbox, i3 etc. you will find that USB drives and Memory cards won't automount. It can be very hard for new Linux users to figure out how to mount the USB drive or Memory card they have just inserted.
Thankfully this can be achieved easily via udev rules.

Open your favorite text-editor as root ( sudo or su) and copy-paste the following,

#!/bin/sh
KERNEL!="sd[b-z]*", GOTO="exit"
ACTION=="add", PROGRAM!="/sbin/blkid %N", GOTO="exit"
IMPORT{program}="/sbin/blkid -o udev -p %N"
ENV{ID_FS_LABEL}!="", ENV{dir_name}="%E{ID_FS_LABEL}"
ENV{ID_FS_LABEL}=="", ENV{dir_name}="flash_drive_%k"
ACTION=="add", RUN+="/bin/mkdir -p '/media/%E{dir_name}'"
ACTION=="add", ENV{mount_options_vfat}="rw,uid=1000,gid=1000,dmask=022,fmask=133,noatime"
ACTION=="add", ENV{ID_FS_TYPE}=="vfat", RUN+="/bin/mount -t vfat -o %E{mount_options_vfat} /dev/%k '/media/%E{dir_name}'"
ACTION=="add", ENV{mount_options_ntfs}="rw,uid=1000,gid=1000,dmask=022,fmask=133,noatime"
ACTION=="add", ENV{ID_FS_TYPE}=="ntfs", RUN+="/bin/mount -t ntfs-3g -o %E{mount_options_ntfs} /dev/%k '/media/%E{dir_name}'"
ACTION=="add", ENV{mount_options_ext2}="users,exec,noatime"
ACTION=="add", ENV{ID_FS_TYPE}=="ext2", RUN+="/bin/mount -t ext2 -o %E{mount_options_ext2} /dev/%k '/media/%E{dir_name}'"
ACTION=="add", ENV{mount_options_ext3}="users,exec,noatime"
ACTION=="add", ENV{ID_FS_TYPE}=="ext3", RUN+="/bin/mount -t ext3 -o %E{mount_options_ext3} /dev/%k '/media/%E{dir_name}'"

ACTION=="remove", ENV{dir_name}!="", RUN+="/bin/umount '/media/%E{dir_name}'", RUN+="/bin/rmdir '/media/%E{dir_name}'"
LABEL="exit"

And save this file in '/etc/udev/rules.d' directory with the name '10-usb-mount.rules'.

We'll need another rules file for Memory cards,

Microsoft finally pulled the plug on Windows XP on 8 April, 2014. Computers running Windows XP won't get any further security updates-patches. This means that the computers running Windows XP have become more vulnerable to the security risks even if they are running latest anti virus-malware products because operating system level exploits are beyond the scope of these products.

So what is the way forward for the people who are running Windows XP on their computers? Well they can obviously buy either Windows 7 or Windows 8. This is exactly what Microsoft wants! But what if you happen to have a computer with Windows XP and you don't have or don't want to spend money on buying Windows 7-8? Or You have a Computer that is not powerful enough to run Windows 7-8?

No need to worry! I'll give you not one, not two, but three alternatives that you can replace Windows XP with. And they all are free! And they all are far more secure than even Windows 7-8!

Here they are ladies and gentleman, Three wonderful free and secure operating systems you can use to replace your ageing and now vulnerable Windows XP.

1. Linux Mint:

What Is Linux Mint?

The purpose of Linux Mint is to produce a modern, elegant and comfortable operating system which is both powerful and easy to use.
Started in 2006, Linux Mint is now the 4th most widely used home operating system behind Microsoft Windows, Apple Mac OS and Canonical's Ubuntu.
Some of the reasons for the success of Linux Mint are:

It works out of the box, with full multimedia support and is extremely easy to use.

It's both free of cost and open source.

It's community-driven. Users are encouraged to send feedback to the project so that their ideas can be used to improve Linux Mint.

Based on Debian and Ubuntu, it provides about 30,000 packages and one of the best software managers.

It's safe and reliable. Thanks to a conservative approach to software updates, a unique Update Manager and the robustness of its Linux architecture, Linux Mint requires very little maintenance (no regressions, no antivirus, no anti-spyware...etc).

What is PCLinuxOS?

PCLinuxOS is a free easy to use Linux-based Operating System for x86 desktops or laptops.

PCLinuxOS is distributed as a LiveCD, and can also be installed to your computer. The LiveCD mode lets you try PCLInuxOS without making any changes to your computer. If you like it, you can install the operating system to your hard drive. Locally installed versions of PCLinuxOS utilize the Advanced Packaging Tool (or APT), a package management system (originally from the Debian distribution), together with Synaptic, a GUI frontend to APT for easy software installation. PCLinuxOS has over 12,000 rpm software packages available from our software repository.

PCLinuxOS has a script called mylivecd, which allows the user to take a ‘snapshot’ of their current hard drive installation (all settings, applications, documents, etc.) and compress it into an ISO CD/DVD image. This allows easy backup of a user’s data and also makes it easy to create your own custom live CD/DVD.

PCLinuxOS has additional support for over 85 language through our simple Addlocale interface.

PCLinuxOS is safe and secure. You never have to worry about viruses, adware, malware or trojans infecting your computer with PCLinuxOS.

GDM :-

First you'll have to install package 'numlockx'. It is available in the repositories of almost every Linux distribution. After you have installed 'numlockx' package open the following file as root in your favorite text editor,

And add the following code right above the line "exit 0" towards the end of the file,

if [ -x /etc/rc.d/rc.numlock ] && [ -x /usr/bin/numlockx ]; then
/usr/bin/numlockx on

Reboot and you'll have your Num Lock on by default at the GDM login window.

LightDM:-

Install package 'numlockx' as described earlier and open the following file as root,

/etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf

And add the following line to the file,

greeter-setup-script=/usr/bin/numlockx on

Reboot and enjoy.

LXDM:-

No need to install 'numlockx' here. Open the following file in your text editor as root,

/etc/lxdm/default.conf

And look for the line "[base]" and just add the following below it,

numlock=1

Save the file and you are done. On next boot you will have Num Lock enabled by default.

Cheers.

It's been a while since I blogged anything. Getting lazier. Anyways the folks who use Linux and/or Mac are familiar with Bash. It's the default shell in most of the Linux distributions and Mac. And the folks who use these operating systems also know the power of working in the terminal. And the prompt you see whenever you open the terminal is controlled by PS1. Most of the time the default prompt is, let's face it, boring. Today I'm gonna give you a nice, colorful, two lined prompt that also displays the exit status of the last command. Exit status means whether the command failed or succeeded.
The main advantage of the two lines is, you get a clear field to input your commands. The '$' variable ['#' for root] will turn red if the last command failed, Otherwise it remains the default white.
Here is the code to change your PS1 prompt,

export PS1='\[\e[01;32m\]\u \[\e[01;37m\]> \[\e[01;33m\]\w\n\[\e[$(((($?>0))*31))m\]\$\[\e[0m\] '

And how it will look in normal condition,

When the command succeeds,

The dreaded moment when your enter a wrong command. Notice the '$' has changed to red,

If you like this and want to change your prompt all you have to do is add the above mentioned code at the end of your '~/.bashrc' file and run the following command,

source .bashrc

This will only change the user's prompt, If you want to change the prompt of root then you will have to add the above code to '/etc/bash.bashrc' file.

Cheers.

Isn't that a beautiful cricket venue?

That is Threlkeld Cricket Club. It is a small village club in Cumbria which has a 1st X1, a midweek side, an U11 and an U13 side.Cricket has been played at Threlkeld for nearly 100 years and until 10 years ago the facilities consisted of a tin shed. After many years of hard work and tireless fundraising, enough money was raised to build a new club house. 5 years after this a local farmer donated a large piece of adjoining land and the pitch was extended, the ground levelled and a new square laid. Threlkeld was runner up in Wisden's prettiest ground competition.
The ground is not only used for Cricket but for the village school sports day, hound trailing, children’s parties and other local events. It is truly a community facility.

In June 2012 after a period of heavy rain a raised culvert filled with gravel and overflowed. Tonnes of gravel, rubble and toxic silt were deposited on large parts of the ground, especially the square. The water course drained old lead mine workings upstream and as a result the silt was laced with lead, arsenic and cadmium.

Not only does the rubble need to be removed but the top soil is contaminated and will need replacing along with proper disposal (a study has been carried out by the England & Wales Cricket Board). Estimates from the England & Wales Cricket Board suggest this will cost upward of £50,000 to sort out. Not only has the club lost it's ground it has also lost a key revenue stream as no money is being spent in the bar on match days and the ground can't be used for events. The club has very limited financial resources and without help Cricket may never be played at Threlkeld again.

But the players of Threlkeld Cricket Club don't like cricket, THEY LOVE IT. So, rather than sobbing at the loss of their long shadows on a manicured green wicket, the team packed up their whites and went on a search for the most inspiring and extreme wickets the glorious Lake District has to offer.
Check them out,

Scenario:

Yesterday i decided to play with my conky configuration file. I edited it and then saved it. Today when i ran conky somehow i didn't like it. It wasn't looking as good as my old configuration. Now here comes the problem! I just can't seem to get the current config to look like the old one! I have forgotten what changes i made yesterday! Damn!
Fortunately it was just a conky configuration file. what if it was some system file? I would have broken my system. What if it was some important work file? That would have been disaster!
This kind of disaster can happen to anybody and everybody who sometime or other edits their files. It happens to the best of us. A simple thing can prevent such a disaster from happening. You may ask what is that?
That simple thing is create a backup copy of file every time before opening it. But implementation of this practice is not easy! Stress, hurry or plain old silly moment and "Hell! I forgot to backup the damn thing!" Disaster!!!

Solution:

I have pieced together a bash script and named it 'hakbak'. hakbak automatically creates backup copy of a file you are about to open. hakbak adds the current time (d:m:y.h:m:s) at the end of file extension so if you have edited a file multiple times you will have multiple backups of that file to choose from. hakbak is almost bulletproof!

What is more intersting is that hakbak after creating backup will also open the file in your chosen application. What this means is that you can create one version of hakbak that can create backup and open a file in gedit or text editor of your choice. If you are a musician or a sound professional you can modify hakbak and make another version that can create backup of your audio file before opening it in for example in audacity. Similarly if you are an artist working with images you can create one more version of hakbak to create backup of your image file before you open it to edit in gimp. You can create as many versions of hakbak you want. Possibilities are endless!

How to install hakbak:

First download the 'hakbak.zip' file. Download Links are at the bottom of the page. Extract 'hakbak.zip' and copy the extracted folder 'hakbak' to your user directory.

We will in this example create three versions of hakbak. You can create as many as you please.

First version is for text and configuration files. We will call this version 'hakbaktext.sh'. Open terminal and run the following command

cp ~/hakbak/hakbak.sh ~/hakbak/hakbaktext.sh

Second version for audio files.

cp ~/hakbak/hakbak.sh ~/hakbak/hakbakaudio.sh

Third version for image files.

cp ~/hakbak/hakbak.sh ~/hakbak/hakbakimage.sh

Okay time to set default applications that hakbak will use.
By default hakbak will open text or configuration files in 'GNU nano'. If you like to edit files with 'GNU nano' skip this step. But if you prefer 'gedit' you can use it as the default application. Run the following command in terminal to make 'gedit' open text and configuration files via hakbak. If you use some other text editor like leafpad, mousepad, geany, vim etc. just replace 'gedit' in the following command with the name of the text editor of your choice.

sed -i 's/nano/gedit/' ~/hakbak/hakbaktext.sh

For second version i'm gonna set 'audacity' as default. Just as above run this command in terminal and again replace 'audacity' in this command with the audio editor of your choice.

sed -i 's/nano/audacity/' ~/hakbak/hakbakaudio.sh

And the third version for image files. Replace 'gimp' in the following command if you use a different image editor.

sed -i 's/nano/gimp/' ~/hakbak/hakbakimage.sh

Now we are going to move all these versions of hakbak to a suitable location. Open terminal and run the following commands.

sudo cp ~/hakbak/hakbaktext.sh /usr/bin

sudo cp ~/hakbak/hakbakaudio.sh /usr/bin

sudo cp ~/hakbak/hakbakimage.sh /usr/bin

Now we need to make them executable. In terminal run the following commands.

sudo chmod a+x /usr/bin/hakbaktext.sh

sudo chmod a+x /usr/bin/hakbakaudio.sh

sudo chmod a+x /usr/bin/hakbakimage.sh

How to use hakbak:

It's very simple. Whenever you want to open a file and if it's a text or configuration file just open terminal, type hakbaktext.sh and press 'Enter' key. hakbak will run and ask for the file path. Give your file path and hit 'Enter'. hakbak will create a backup of that file with current time at the end of the file extension and open it in 'gedit' or any other text editor you have set.

For example i want to open and edit .conkyrc file which is inside 'conky' folder in user directory. I will open terminal and run,

hakbaktext.sh

And when prompted for the complete file path i will enter my file path,

~/conky/.conkyrc

Easy, isn't it?
I can do the same with audio files. This time i will run hakbakaudio.sh in terminal,

hakbakaudio.sh

And will enter the path to my audio file when prompted,

~/music/test.mp3

When i want to open an image for editing i will open terminal and run,

hakbakimage.sh

Then i will enter the path to the image i want to edit,

~/images/image1.jpg

When you want to edit text or config files that require super user privileges just use 'sudo' in terminal with hakbak.
For example i want to change the default boot entry of grub2. For this i need to open and edit '/etc/default/grub' file. Now i will need elevated privilege to edit this file. So i will run hakbaktext.sh with 'sudo' or 'su' in terminal,

sudo hakbaktext.sh

I will be prompted to enter 'sudo' password and after that when hakbaktext.sh asks for the complete file path i will enter the path to the default grub config file,

/etc/default/grub

Conclusion:

I'm not a programmer and this script might not be the most elegant one but it does the job! And it does it with simplicity! You don't have to install any thing extra. And you just run it from terminal so it fits in your routine easily. And once you start using hakbak you will almost never lose important data. You will always have multiple backups ready if something goes wrong. hakbak is like your personal 'Version control system'.

Comments, Suggestions, Thoughts are welcome! Cheers!!!
Update (26-06-13):

Bodhi Linux forum member spainach came up with hakbakmod. hakbakmod comes with install script, .desktop file and zenity. Install script makes it very easy to install and zenity gives graphical user interface and .desktop file makes it available from menu. So you don't have to use terminal to run and operate hakbak. Thanks spainach for this wonderful mod. You can download hakbakmod from the Download section below.

Have I told you lately that I love you?

Have I told you there's no one else above you?
Fill my heart with gladness, take away all my sadness,
Ease my troubles, that's what you do.
For the morning sun in all it's glory,
Meets the day with hope and comfort too,
You fill my life with laughter, somehow you make it better,
Ease my troubles, that's what you do.
There's a love less defined,
And its yours and its mine,
Like the sun.
And at the end of the day,
We should give thanks and pray,
To the one, to the one.
Have I told you lately that I love you?

If I had to live my life without you near me
The days would all be empty
The nights would seem so long
With you I see forever oh so clearly
I might have been in love before
But it never felt this strong
Our dreams are young and we both know
They'll take us where we want to go
Hold me now
Touch me now
I don't want to live without you
Nothing's gonna change my love for you
You ought to know by now how much I love you
One thing you can be sure of
I'll never ask for more than your love
Nothing's gonna change my love for you
You ought to know by now how much I love you
The world may change my whole life through
But nothing's gonna change my love for you
If the road ahead is not so easy
Our love will lead the way for us
Like a guiding star
I'll be there for you if you should need me
You don't have to change a thing
I love you just the way you are
So come with me and share the view
I'll help you see forever too
Hold me now
Touch me now
I don't want to live without you
Nothing's gonna change my love for you
You ought to know by now how much I love you
One thing you can be sure of
I'll never ask for more than your love

You're my peace of mind in this crazy world.
You're everything I've tried to find, your love is a pearl.
You're my Mona Lisa, you're my rainbow skies,
and my only prayer is that you realize
you'll always be beautiful in my eyes.
The world will turn, and the seasons will change,
and all the lesson we will learn will be beautiful and strange.
We'll have our fill of tears, our share of sighs.
My only prayer is that you realize
you'll always be beautiful in my eyes.
You will always be beautiful in my eyes.
And the passing years will show
that you will always grow ever more beautiful in my eyes.
When there are lines upon my face from a lifetime of smiles,
when the time comes to embrace for one long last while,
we can laugh about how time really flies.
We won't say goodbye 'cause true love never dies.
You'll always be beautiful in my eyes.
You will always be beautiful in my eyes.
you will always grow ever more beautiful in my eyes.
The passing years will show that you will always grow
ever more beautiful in my eyes.

Look into my eyes, you will see What you mean to me
Search your heart, search your soul
And when you find me there you'll search no more
Don't tell me it's not worth tryin' for
You can't tell me it's not worth dyin' for
You know it's true
Everything I do, I do it for you
Look into your heart, you will find
There's nothin' there to hide
Take me as I am, take my life
I would give it all, I would sacrifice
Don't tell me it's not worth fightin' for
I can't help it, there's nothin' I want more
You know it's true
Everything I do, I do it for you
There's no love, like your love
And no other, could give more love
There's nowhere, unless you're there
All the time, all the way
Look into your heart
you can't tell me it's not worth tryin' for
I can't help it, there's nothin' I want more
Yeah,
I would fight for you, I'd lie for you
Walk the wire for you, I'd die for you
You know it's true
Everything I do, I do it for you
Everything I do, darling
And we'll see it through
Oh we'll see it through
Look into your heart
You can't tell me it ain't worth dying for
I'll be there, yeah
I'll walk the wire
Oh, I'm going all the way, all they way.

The actor:

He takes you out and he takes you up
'cause he can show you so much
I go to bed and tomorrow again
there's a lot of work to be done
He gives you gold and he'll promise you
the whole world will be yours
I just can tell you I love you so
even though my odds are low
I'm not an actor I'm not a star
and I don't even have my own car
But I'm hoping so much you'll stay
that you will love me anyway
The dirty games and the neon-shows this is the world he knows
Watching the stars satisfies my soul
thinking of him makes me feel so cold
The fancy cars and the restaurants
you're just so fond of the man
Sometimes I wonder if you are blind
can't you see, he's got dirt on his mind
I'm not an actor I'm not a star
and I don't even have my own car...

Well i hope this will make my blog a bit romantic on this day of romance!

Lesson 1:

A man is getting into the shower just as his wife is finishing up her shower, when the doorbell rings.

The wife quickly wraps herself in a towel and runs downstairs. When she opens the
door, there stands Bob, the next-door neighbour. Before she says a word, Bob says, 'I'll give you $800 to drop that towel.' After thinking for a moment, the woman drops her towel and stands naked in front of Bob, after a few seconds, Bob hands her $800 and leaves. The woman wraps back up in the towel and goes back upstairs. When she gets to the bathroom, her husband asks, 'Who was that?' 'It was Bob the next door neighbour she replies. 'Great,' the husband says, 'did he say anything about the $800 he owes me?'

Moral of the story:

If you share critical information pertaining to credit and risk with your shareholders in time, you may be in a position to prevent avoidable exposure.

Lesson 2:

A priest offered a Nun a lift.

She got in and crossed her legs, forcing her gown to reveal a leg. The priest nearly had an accident. After controlling the car, he stealthily slid his hand up her leg. The nun said, 'Father, remember Psalm 129?' The priest removed his hand. But, changing gears, he let his hand slide up her leg again. The nun once again said, 'Father, remember Psalm 129?' The priest apologized 'Sorry sister but the flesh is weak.' Arriving at the convent, the nun sighed heavily and went on her way. On his arrival at the church, the priest rushed to look up Psalm 129. It said, 'Go forth and seek, further up, you will find glory.'

Moral of the story:

If you are not well informed in your job, you might miss a great opportunity.

Lesson 3:

A sales rep, an administration clerk, and the manager are walking to lunch when they find an antique oil lamp.

They rub it and a Genie comes out. The Genie says, 'I'll give each of you just one wish.' 'Me first! Me first!' says the admin clerk. 'I want to be in the Bahamas , driving a speedboat, without a care in the world.' Puff! She's gone. 'Me next! Me next!' says the sales rep. 'I want to be in Hawaii , relaxing on the beach with my personal masseuse, an endless supply of Pina Coladas and the love of my life...'
Puff! He's gone. 'OK, you're up,' the Genie says to the manager. The manager says, 'I want those two back in the office after lunch.'

Moral of the story:

Always let your boss have the first say.

Lesson 4:

An eagle was sitting on a tree resting, doing nothing.

A small rabbit saw the eagle and asked him, 'Can I also sit like you and do nothing?'
The eagle answered: 'Sure, why not.'
So, the rabbit sat on the ground below the eagle and rested. All of a sudden, a fox appeared, jumped on the rabbit and ate it.

Moral of the story:

To be sitting and doing nothing, you must be sitting very, very high up.

Lesson 5:

A turkey was chatting with a bull.

'I would love to be able to get to the top of that tree' sighed the turkey, 'but I haven't got the energy.' 'Well, why don't you nibble on some of my droppings?' replied the bull. They're packed with nutrients.' The turkey pecked at a lump of dung, and found it actually gave him enough strength to reach the lowest branch of the tree. The next day, after eating some more dung, he reached the second branch. Finally after a fourth night, the turkey was proudly perched at the top of the tree. He was promptly spotted by a farmer, who shot him out of the tree.

Moral of the story:

Bull Shit might get you to the top, but it won't keep you there.

Lesson 6:

A little bird was flying south for the winter. It was so cold the bird froze and fell to the ground into a large field.

While he was lying there, a cow came by and dropped some dung on him. As the frozen bird lay there in the pile of cow dung, he began to realize how warm he was. The dung was actually thawing him out! He lay there all warm and happy, and soon began to sing for joy. A passing cat heard the bird singing and came to investigate. Following the sound, the cat discovered the bird under the pile of cow dung, and promptly dug him out and ate him.

Do you want to send a love letter to your lover or want to send some sensitive information and want this love letter or information to remain secret and hidden so other persons like father of your girlfriend or business-office rival can't see your message? Today i will show you how to do this without any software. For example there is a message hidden in the image below

I've chosen the image of Krishna-Radha deliberately as the message hidden in the image is a message of love! Can you see the message in the image?!?
Well of course you can't see the message, no one can! It's relatively easy to embed message in image. Here's how to do it,
I've an image of Lord Krishna in my 'pictures' folder in my home directory and i want to hide a secret love letter in that image. We need to know the name of the image and in my case the name is 'krishna1.jpg'. Open your favorite terminal emulator and cd to the directory that contains the image. for this example the image 'krishna1.jpg' is inside directory 'pictures'

cd pictures

Run the following command and replace 'krishna1.jpg' with the name of your image and 'krishna2.jpg' with any file name you wish

cat krishna1.jpg -> krishna2.jpg

Hit Enter and your terminal cursor will start blinking and you can start typing your message here and when you have finished writing it press 'Ctrl+D' on your keyboard to finish the process. You will now have a new image containing hidden message in your working directory like for example after running the above command i have 'krishna2.jpg' inside my 'pictures' folder. you can share-send this image without worrying about anyone seeing the message hidden inside it. It will open normally like any-other image in image viewer. But how can your lover for example read the message hidden inside the image?!? it's easy, tell her to save the image to her home directory and run the following command in terminal

tail krishna2.jpg

Of-course replace the 'krishna2.jpg' in the above command with the name of your image. And in terminal the outcome of the above command will show your message like this

You can clearly see the hidden message at the bottom of the terminal.

Okay Okay all you Windows users! I can understand your feelings! You can't do this in Windows! Sorry! This is another reason for you to install Linux. Linux has become very very easy now a days and i would say that out of box it is easier and friendlier than Windows. And you don't even have to remove Windows to install Linux. Linux will reside happily beside your Windows! I suggest you to install either Linux Mint or SalixOS. You can't go wrong with any of them. But how would my girlfriend decode the image i hear you say! First install Linux on your PC and then you can pretend to be a Linux geek and help your girlfriend to install Linux on her computer, this will make you look smart to her and who knows it might even help you make a good impression on her father!
Cheers!!!

VLC fans out there might go crazy at the post title but in my limited experience I've found SMPlayer to be a bit lighter on resources while playing high quality videos and frame-rate tends to be better compared to VLC. Other than that they both are wonderful cross-platform open source media players and no other commercial media player out there can hold a candle to them.

SMTube is already included in the Windows packages but on Linux it's an independent package.
SMTube's code was taken from UMPlayer (developed by Ori Rejwan).
This browser as i already mentioned before can not only search & play Youtube videos but it's also capable of downloading them.

Well, after reading this brief introduction of SMPlayer even the die-hard
VLC fans would agree that SMPlayer is a great media player and i would
say if you install SMPlayer on your Linux or Windows PC you won't ever
be in need for another media player. Time to say bye for now! Enjoy a great multimedia experience with SMPlayer! Cheers!!!

I'm a computer technician and people come to me with all sorts of computer related problems and do you know what is the most common complain? My Windows PC runs so damn slow!

There are five main reasons for a slow windows PC and today I'm going to tell you what those five reasons are and how to resolve them and make your windows PC run faster

Reason No.1: Virus Infection

Almost 7 out of 10 windows computers that i come across are infected by computer virus of one sort or another. A computer virus is a computer program that can replicate itself and spread from one computer to another. And if your windows PC is running slow then chances are that it might be infected by virus. Antivirus softwares are expensive but some Antivirus companies offer the home edition of their product free for home usage. Avast is one such product. Home edition of Avast Antivirus is free to use and comes with almost all the features you would expect from a simple Antivirus software.

Okay the first thing to do is download Avast free Antivirus from here
Download Avast
Avast gives you 30 days time period to register the free Antivirus. Registration is simple and of course free. After registration you get a 365 days of license to use it on your PC.
After installing Avast the first thing you should do is update the virus definitions. Once update is completed scan all your drives including your Pen drive and Memory card.

Reason No.2: Junk & temporary files

Junk and temp files are by-products of Operating system itself and installed softwares. As the time goes on these junk and temp files keep increasing and they can play a big part in slowing down your Windows PC.

There are plenty of Junk-temp cleaners out there but the best is BleachBit. BleachBit is a cross platform, open source software.

BleachBit can free cache, delete cookies, clear Internet history, shred temporary files, delete logs, and discard junk. It also cleans 90 applications including Firefox, Internet Explorer, Adobe Flash, Google Chrome, Opera, Safari, and more. BleachBit includes advanced features such as shredding files to prevent recovery, wiping free disk space to hide traces of files deleted by other applications, and vacuuming Firefox to make it faster. Get BleachBit for Windows from here
Download BleachBit

Reason No.3: Windows Registry problems

The Windows Registry is a hierarchical database that stores configuration settings and options on Microsoft Windows operating systems. It contains settings for low-level operating system components as well as the applications running on the platform. The kernel, device drivers, services, SAM, user interface and third party applications all make use of the registry. The registry also provides a means to access counters for profiling system performance. As you go on using Windows you install-remove all sorts of applications and this usage leaves plenty of broken or corrupt Registry entries. Cleaning Windows Registry errors can help make your PC run faster. ToniArts developed EasyCleaner is a very good Registry cleaner.

In fact to call EasyCleaner just Registry cleaner would be injustice to this great freeware as it can also delete all kinds of unnecessary files such as temps and backups. It can search for duplicate files and you can view some interesting info about your disk space usage. With it you can also manage startup programs, invalid shortcuts and add/remove software list. You can get it from here
Download EasyCleaner

Reason No.4: File system fragmentation

When the partition is formatted for the file system the partition contains only a few small internal structures and is otherwise one contiguous block of empty space. This means that the allocator algorithm is completely free to place newly created files anywhere on the partition. For some time after creation, files on the file system can be laid out near-optimally. When
the operating system and applications are installed or other archives are unpacked, laying out separate files sequentially also means that related files are likely to be positioned close to each other. However, as existing files are deleted new regions of free space are created. When existing files are appended to it is often impossible to resume the write exactly where the file used to end as another file may already be allocated there thus, a new fragment has to be allocated. As time goes on free space as well as frequently appended files tend to fragment more. Shorter regions of free space also mean that the allocator is no longer able to allocate new files contiguously, and has to break them into fragments.

When files consist of many little fragments scattered around the disk
the computer needs more mechanical work to read them. Because of that
the disk access becomes slower and naturally your Windows PC runs slower. So you need to Defragment your file system. And nothing is better than Ultradefrag when it comes to removing fragmentation.

Ultradefrag is an Open Source Defragmentation tool for the Windows. It can defragment any system files including registry hives and paging file. It can Defrag FAT, exFAT and NTFS file systems.
Get Ultrafefrag from here Download UltraDefrag

Reason no.5: Too many start up programs

Many softwares add their entry to the list of programs that auto-start with the Windows. Meaning that they load themselves as you boot Windows and continue to run in the background. They not only make the booting process of Windows slow but also eats away your computer resources such as RAM and CPU. I suggest you to keep Antivirus and Backup programs and remove every other item from the list of start up programs. It's very easy to manage the start up programs with the help of EasyCleaner we looked at earlier.

Run EasyCleaner and in the main window click on 'Startup' this would open 'Startup inspector' window. Here in the main window click on the entry you want to remove and then hit 'delete' at the bottom of the window to remove that entry from the start up list. As i suggested earlier you can safely remove everything from this list apart from Antivirus and Backup programs.

Well it's time for me to say Adiós. If you update Antivirus daily, remove junk files, clean Windows Registry and inspect your start up programs once every week, Defragment your Hard Disk once every month your Windows PC will run lightning fast. Cheers!!!

Well after reading my blog posts you might have wondered who the hack is this Haker Defo?!?

My real name is Bhikhu and I am from Maroli, a small town in Gujarat, India. I make my living out of selling and repairing computers. I studied Electrical Engineering from Dr. S & S. S. Ghandhy College of Engineering & Technology, Surat. My main hobby is Music. I am a die-hard Rock Music fan and occasionally write a few songs of my own. I used to paint but now a days don’t find time and desire to do so.
You might also have wondered about the meaning of ‘hakerdefo’?!? To be honest it doesn’t have any meaning. It is one of those useless-meaningless things that i often come-up with ;-)
Thanks for visiting my blog and don’t forget to leave your advice-critic-suggestion in the comments. You can also send an email to hakerdefo AT gmail DOT com
Window Control Buttons On The Left:

Ubuntu Unity places the Minimize, Maximize and Close buttons on the left in a window and after years and years of seeing and using them from the right hand side of the window it can be quite frustrating, painful and confusing. To change them to the right

In Ubuntu 12.10

Press 'Alt-F2' type dconf-editor into the box and press Enter

Go to org>gnome>desktop>wm>preferences

Click on 'button_layout' on the right panel

Change 'button_layout' from 'close, minimize, maximize:' to ':minimize, maximize, close' and press Enter

In Ubuntu 12.04

Open Terminal

Run the following command in Terminal

sudo apt-get install gconf-editor

Press 'Alt-F2' type gconf-editor into the box and press Enter

Go to apps>metacity>general

Click on 'button_layout' on the right panel

Change 'button_layout' from 'close, minimize, maximize:' to ':minimize, maximize, close' and press Enter

Well that's it from me then. After making above changes I'm quite sure that your experience of working with Ubuntu Unity will be a lot better and intuitive. CD and DVD media are pron to wear and tear and scratches and if they are installation media of operating system any read error can be a huge problem. So having a bootable USB flash drive of Windows 7 or Windows 8 can always come in handy.

There are apps out there that can do the job but some of them are buggy and you might end up with a corrupt Windows install. I'll here help you make a bootable USB flash drive without any third party app.

Format your USB flash drive simply by right clicking on it in 'My Computer' and selecting 'Format'

Now go to >Start menu >All programs >Accessories and right click on 'Command Prompt' and Run it as administrator.

Now in Command Prompt run

DISKPART

Then

LIST VOL

This will give you the information of your Disk Volumes. Make note of your USB Flash drive's number. We will assume here that it is VOL 1

SELECT VOL 1

ACTIVE

EXIT

Minimize 'Command Prompt' window. Now put your Windows 7 or Windows 8 DVD in your DVD Writer. Go to 'My Computer' and make note of your DVD writer's drive letter. Mine is 'D'. Also note down the drive letter of USB Flash drive. Mine is 'E'. Now back to 'Command Prompt'

D: CD BOOT

BOOTSECT.EXE /NT60 E:

Close the 'Command Prompt' window, go to 'My Computer' and right click on DVD Writer 'D' and 'Open' it. Hit 'Ctrl+A' to select everything and then 'Ctrl+C' to copy all the content. Now open your USB Flash drive and paste here by 'Ctrl+V'

Reboot your PC and change the boot order of BIOS to boot from your newly created Windows installation USB Flash drive.

Here's a scenario, You reinstalled Windows
on your dual booting PC and it replaced Grub2 with it's own bootloader and now you
can't boot into your Linux. Or your Grub2 for some reason or other got
corrupted and you are unable to boot your operating systems.

Well worry not cause it's relatively easy to fix this
problem.

All we'll need is a Live CD of
any Linux Distro. Boot the CD and once you are running the live
environment open the Terminal Emulator and execute the following
commands. Replace the 'sda1' in the article with the partition where your Linux is installed. You will also have to change 'sda' with your hard disk.
Command 'fdisk -l' will give you all the info regarding your hdd and partitions.

Okay then lets recover Grub2

umount /mnt

reboot

That's it! On reboot you'll have good old grub menu to greet you!!! Cheers!!!

What is Arch Linux?

Arch Linux is an independently developed, i686/x86-64 general purpose GNU/Linux distribution versatile enough to suit any role. Development focuses on simplicity, minimalism, and code elegance. Arch is installed as a minimal base system, configured by the user upon which their own ideal environment is assembled by installing only what is required or desired for their unique purposes.

GUI configuration utilities are not officially provided, and most system configuration is performed from the shell and a text editor. Based on a rolling-release model, Arch strives to stay bleeding edge, and typically offers the latest stable versions of most software.

Should i install Arch Linux?

If you wish to embrace the 'do-it-yourself' approach and require or desire a simple, elegant, highly customizable, bleeding edge, general purpose GNU/Linux distribution you should install Arch Linux.

Who shouldn't install Arch Linux?

If you do not have the ability/time/desire for a 'do-it-yourself' GNU/Linux distribution.
If you believe an operating system should configure itself, run out of the box, and include a complete default set of software and desktop environment on the installation media then DO NOT INSTALL Arch Linux.

Let's do it!

Okay now that you have decided to take the plunge and install Arch Linux just follow this guide closely and you'll have a working Arch Linux in no time.
The first thing you will have to do is prepare your hard disk for the Arch install. You will need at least one free partition on your hard disk. You can create the partition during Arch installation but it will be much easier and safer to use Gparted. You can get get Gpated live cd from here

http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php

Gparted has excellent documentation on how to resize, delete, create, modify hard disk partitions. You can read the documentation here

http://gparted.sourceforge.net/display-doc.php?name=gparted-live-manual#gparted-live-using-gparted-application

After you have created the partition to install Arch it is time to get the install media. Arch ISO is dual arch meaning you can install either 32 bit or 64 bit version of Arch using the same media. Here's the link to get your Arch ISO

https://www.archlinux.org/download/

Okey-dokey now that you have downloaded the ISO you need to burn it on CD. There are many apps to do this and if you don't know how to burn ISO you should stop right here cause Arch ain't for you my friend, not yet anyway.

Boot your Arch CD and at first prompt choose the Arch version you want to install. Remember that i686 means 32 bit and x86-64 naturally means 64 bit. After the booting process finishes you will end up at command prompt. Run the following command to get the info of your current partition layout

fdisk -l

Make note of the partition you want to install Arch on. For this article we are gonna assume that it is sda1. Now we need to mount the root partition. If you plan to use a separate home partition then you'll have to mount that partition too. To mount root partition run the following command

mount /dev/sda1 /mnt

Now it's time to install the base by issuing this command

pacstrap -i /mnt base base-devel

After the base install finishes create fstab by

genfstab -U -p /mnt >> /mnt/etc/fstab

Let's now chroot in to our Arch base

arch-chroot /mnt

Time to set the Locale. By default every entry in locale.gen file is commented out and we need to uncomment the languages we want. To do so run

nano /etc/locale.gen

Here I'm going to remove # from #en_US.UTF-8 line as I'm going to use US English as my language. You can uncomment more than one entry. After you are finished hit Ctrl+X to exit, then Y and Enter to save your changes. Now we need to generate the locale file by issuing the command

locale-gen

We also need to generate a file called locale.conf the command I'm gonna run is for US English you need to change it according to your language

echo LANG=en_US.UTF-8 > /etc/locale.conf
export LANG=en_US.UTF-8

It's time to set the Time Zone. To view the available zones

ls /usr/share/zoneinfo/

Make note of your zone. Mine is Asia. Let's find out the subzone of Asia

ls /usr/share/zoneinfo/Asia

Okay my subzone is Kolkata. Make note of the subzone that belongs to you and run the following command to set Time Zone. Don't forget to replace Asia & Kolkata with your relevant zone and subzone

ln -s /usr/share/zoneinfo/Asia/Kolkata /etc/localtime

Now we are going to set hardware clock. If you are planning to use Arch without Windows run the following command

hwclock --systohc --utc

But if you are using or planning to use Arch with any versions of Windows then you need to issue the following command

hwclock --systohc --localtime

Let's now configure network. If you are on a desktop PC and are using a wired network

systemctl enable dhcpcd@eth0.service

But if you have a laptop and are planning to use wifi then run the following commands to install the wifi tools and enable wireless service

pacman -S wireless_tools wpa_supplicant wpa_actiond dialog
wifi-menu
systemctl enable net-auto-wireless.service

Okay we are getting close to finishing the installation. Let's create the password for the root account

passwd

Enter your desired password for the root account. Now let's create a normal user account

useradd -m -g users -G wheel -s /bin/bash hakerdefo

Obviously replace hakerdefo in the above command with your username. Now create password for hakerdefo aka normal user

passwd hakerdefo

Let's now install and configure sudo

pacman -S sudo

Now we need to add our user to sudoers file and to do so the simplest method is to uncomment the wheel group in sudoers file

EDITOR=nano visudo

Uncomment the following line

%wheel ALL=(ALL) ALL

And as we did earlier with our locale.gen file hit Ctrl+X to exit, then Y and Enter to save your changes. You can skip the next step which is to install bootloader grub2 if you already have a Linux like Ubuntu or any other distro running on your PC if you don't then install grub2 by following command and don't forget to replace 'sda' with your relevant hard disk

pacman -S grub-bios
grub-install --target=i386-pc --recheck /dev/sda
cp /usr/share/locale/en\@quot/LC_MESSAGES/grub.mo /boot/grub/locale/en.mo

Now install os-prober

pacman -S os-prober

Time to configure grub

grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg

If you have decided to skip the grub installation and are planning to add the arch to your grub menu via let's say grub of Ubuntu then there are chances that even if your Ubuntu grub detects the Arch but it will fail to boot Arch. It happens due to limitations of os-prober script. In that case add the following in your grub 40_custom file. Replace the hdd-partition in setroot according to your setup.

menuentry "Arch" {
insmod part_msdos
insmod ext2
set root='(hd0,msdos1)'
/boot/vmlinuz-linux
/boot/initramfs-linux.img
}

Now if you have installed 64 bit Arch we need to add the multilib repo to pacman's repo list. Here's how you do it

nano /etc/pacman.conf

Go to "Repositories" section of the configuration file and add the following at the bottom

[multilib]
Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist

Ctrl+X, then Y and Enter. Nano is a good little editor. Okay it's time to exit from the chroot

exit

Unmount the root partition

umount /mnt

And reboot

reboot

Remove your Arch CD and select Arch from grub menu. Login with your username and password. Let's now install a basic x window system

sudo pacman -S xorg-server xorg-xinit xorg-server-utils

And

sudo pacman -S xorg-twm xorg-xclock xterm

Life without sound is boring, ain't it?

sudo pacman -S alsa-utils

Now comes the moment of truth. If everything has gone okay and you have followed the steps in the guide correctly you should see xterm window with a clock and should be able to use your mouse by issuing the command

startx

Well guys that's about it from me. From here on you need to install a DE and/or a window manager of your choice and there are far too many possible choices out there writing about them is beyond the scope of this guide and beyond my knowledge.

EDIT: the install step 'systemctl enable dhcpcd@eth0.service' will not have the correct effect. There is a combination of factors which keep it from working. First, systemd now renames network interfaces on boot. It does this so that network interfaces will have predictable, and never changing, names. Second, the above command will create a service file that has "eth0" hardwired into it no matter what interface you use when you enable the service. The combination of these two, a network interface that will never be "eth0" and a service that always specifies "eth0", means that on reboot the user will not have network access.
The solution to this is to do (including executing the original non-working command to create the link to modify in a few steps):
in a terminal to get your particular networking card name

iplink

For example, mine is "enp2s0". Then, go to

/etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/

and you will see

dhcpcd@eth0.service

Rename that to the correct interface name as "ip link" gave you above. In my case the command is

sudo mv dhcpcd@eth0.service dhcpcd\@enp2s0.service

Obviously replace 'enp2s0' in the above command with your output of iplink. I really want to thank Bill Pickett aka headkase for pointing out this in arch forums and providing the above solution.
